Pigney was established in the Eden Valley in 1824, initially operating as blacksmiths. From shoeing horses in the 19th and 20th centuries to now selling and servicing agricultural machinery as tractors and machinery replaced horsepower, the family business has continued to expand and change within the local farming community. They are still a completely independent, family-owned business to this day. Over the past 50 years, they have grown to include a hardware and ironmongery store, gasoline pumps, and a business that serves the horticultural and forestry industries. Since moving to their current location in the heart of Appleby in 1961, they now have a fully stocked showroom of garden machinery, agricultural stores, an authentically old-fashioned fuel station, and the Tardis, which is their highly stocked Hardware and Ironmongery Shop! In 2002 Pigney built a warehouse specifically for the purpose outside of Appleby to store their expanding inventory of agricultural machinery.
